The TLS database can be searched in the following ways:
- TLS lexical database
- A comprehensive search, allowing searches in any field of the database.

- TLS gloss list
- A search of English and Swahili glosses, allowing searches of those fields which have information regarding the vocabulary list used in making TLS.

- TLS language names
- A search of the TLS languages, allowing a quick search to see what languages are in TLS and their Guthrie numbers.
The second two search options are more simple than the first which, due to the large amount of searchable data
has been designed with extra features.
